I can't believe these guys are in business.

Sorry if this is long - and maybe should be in rants section... but i wanna get the message in the title out there.

My wife's lil sis wanted a new digital camera so we did some research for her and had decided on the Canon Powershot 850. Searching online DigitalNerds.com had the lowest price for said camera.

After we placed the order I recieved a call on my cell from them and in a very thick accent he asked for a butchering of my wifes name - she was in a meeting at church so i asked if i could help and he said that she had ordered a camera and he needed to speak to her before he would ship it. I asked if there was anything i could do but he refused to talk to me and had me have her call him back.

Turns out their business plan is to sell the product cheap and then try to scam you into buying overpriced additives. Their 1G SD memory cards are $149.99 where at Best Buy they are in the neighborhood of $40. She told him she didnt want a card - and he started in on the battery. He said the battery that shipped with the camera was a "demo only" battery and that it wouldn't last longer than 20 minutes. The one listed on their site was the NB-5L - I didn't look into it too much but the 10 customer reviews i read of that battery said it was great and lasted for over 250 pics on a Canon with the flash and screen on. He was very persistent so Matina brought me the phone and explained what he was doing. I told him that if they were selling a camera with a horrible battery that he would get a bad review. To this he responded "Are you threatening me!!! - cause if you are I will cancel your order right now!" I said "Excuse me?" to which he repeated his statement. When i said no i wasn't "threatening you" i was just letting you know I would feel very lied to as a customer if that were the case. He proceeded to tell me that He could do anything he wants and if he wanted to cancel the order he would and there was nothing i could do about it. I told him i couldn't believe that this was how they treated customers and He kept pushing me to get the battery and insisted that i had to choose right then and he wouldn't let me call him back (He insisted like 5 times that they do not allow callbacks of any kind) after looking into the product he was trying to sell me... very sketchy... when i was looking up the battery online he got tired of waiting and told me to call him back. To this I naturally replied - "I thought you didn't allow callbacks" - He said "Your order is cancelled - There is nothing you can do about that now - goodbye"

I think their whole business plan is to sell the camera right at cost and try to con you into buying more overpriced crap and if you won't piss you off so much you don't wanna do business with them and cancel your order so they don't lose money on the main product. I also don't know if they target women who order but he was very specific that he only wanted to deal with her not me.

From what i can tell if they are actually shipping the NB-5L battery with the camera then they are shipping a fine product - but lieing to you about the quality to try to get you to buy stuff you don't need - when you are already kindof trapped with your order.

Ya... I wasn't really sure the best way to get this out to people - I posted a shorter version of the story on the newsgroups at work - and All the Software Engineers on the F18 Mission Processing will know about it.

If they try to charge anything then I'll really go after them and try to pull any strings you guys might know of to piss them off. Thing that really bothers me is there is no proof of them cancelling the order other than the phone conversation.

Excellent ... I read several of the posts on Cnet and it's amazing this place is still in business. They probably succeed with name changes and being located overseas.

I guess there is a couple of these that are referred to as the "off Broadway" group - they are in New York just off Broadway.

I had my wife cancel her debit card - as many of the stories ended with identity theft.

They tried to upsell me to and when I wouldn't do it my order was cancelled and the product on backorder for 20 weeks. Give me a break! These very rude individuals are not from this country, they threatened to "break my head open" and called me an "idiot". I cannot even believe this place can even operate let a lone stay in business.

I urge you to do as I did and PLEASE file a complaint with the Better Business Bureau at www.newyork.bbb.org
